International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Rye High School is a Candidate School for the Diploma Programme (DP). This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Rye High School believes is important for our students.
Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

WHAT IS THE international baccalaureate diploma programme?
Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation offering 4 highly respected programmes of international education that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills needed to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous two-year educational programme designed for students in their junior and senior years. The DP programme prepares students for university success by providing a broad and challenging curriculum. Students study six subjects from various disciplines, fostering well-rounded development. Alongside academics, the programme emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, creativity, activity, service, and exploration of the nature of knowledge. This holistic approach, combined with its widespread recognition by universities, make the IB DP a valuable option for students seeking a strong foundation for higher education. Upon completion of the coursework students will graduate with an IB Diploma, an internationally recognized degree.
Students enrolling in the DP programme are required to take six courses and pass all required exams. In addition, students are expected to complete the core curricula: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service. Students can choose to take one or several IB courses individually and not enroll in the full DP programme.
what are theory of knowledge, extended essay and creativity, activity and service COMPONENTS?
In addition to coursework, students who earn an IB Diploma must also complete these three core elements of the programme:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): challenges students to critically reflect on the nature and acquisition of knowledge.
- The Extended Essay (EE): a 4,000-word independent research essay on a topic of the student's choice within a chosen subject area (approximately 8 pages).
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): requires students to explore their passions, stay active, and contribute to their communities through hands-on experiences.
